Checking Your Coverage for Drug and Alcohol Treatment
Exclusive Hawaii Rehab has many different treatment options and care levels depending on what works best for you. Because of this, not every client’s stay here is billed the same.
You can always contact us to get a rundown of treatment pricing, and loop in your insurance agent – or we can call them for you in an attempt to ensure you get the best possible form of coverage from our health care providers.
Otherwise, whatever Cigna Health Insurance does not cover typically must be paid out of pocket.
How to Check Your Options If Cigna Insurance Doesn’t Cover What You Need
When Cigna Insurance turns you down for the majority of rehab, there are additional ways you can source the funds to cover drug and alcohol rehab. Certain facilities offer payment plans or accept private payments from third parties.
States also have multiple free drug and alcohol rehab options that are funded federally or at the state level, made specifically for those who don’t receive enough coverage and can’t pay the additional out-of-pocket expenses.
Every person in the United States is entitled to and must have health insurance. And every health insurance must cover mental health and substance misuse treatment.
However, there are no parameters regarding the specific type of rehab coverage any one insurance company must provide.
This means that certain treatment centers may not be covered by certain providers at all – but there’s always an alternative.
Employee Assistance Program Through Cigna Insurance
The employee assistance program (EAP) provided by Cigna Health Insurance gives you direct access to professionals who can counsel you regarding your substance use issues. The EAP is a healthcare plan provided by your employer.
In the event you must attend substance misuse treatment, you’ll be allowed to meet with a counselor, a consultant, or chat with someone over the phone. It also helps secure your job if you leave for treatment.
What Does Cigna Insurance Cover?
Again, this is completely dependent on your plan. However, Cigna Insurance provides coverage for a varying scope of services that may include all or some of the following:
- Medically assisted detox
- Inpatient care
- Outpatient Rehab
- Intensive Outpatient Rehab
- Partial Hospitalization Programs
- Dual Diagnosis
- Medication-Assisted Treatment
Dual Diagnosis for Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Physicians and substance abuse treatment facilities are offering dual diagnosis treatment more often. Cigna Insurance provides coverage for standard mental health treatment in addition to dual diagnosis.
This treatment is available in conjunction with substance abuse or separate from any misuse disorder. If you suffer from PTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, OCD, or any other behavioral or mental health disorder, you’re eligible for treatment.
Be sure to contact your agent regarding your goals for treatment and potential facilities you’d like to attend.
Medication Therapy for Drug and Alcohol Rehab
If you require prescription medications as part of your treatment during inpatient or outpatient rehab, Cigna Insurance may cover the cost of the prescribed drugs. It’s important to find out whether Cigna Health Insurance covers treatment outside of rehab, or solely during the period you’re enrolled in treatment.
Outpatient Services for Drug Abuse
During outpatient rehab, the client still shows up to the designated clinic or mental health facility (sometimes outside the counselor’s office). These therapeutic sessions at outpatient generally take place twice per week, for a total of 4-6 hours.
During outpatient treatment, clients are allowed to live at home and maintain steady work. This is often a great transitional form of treatment for clients who are exiting residential-based rehab.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
During intensive outpatient services, clients typically meet with counselors for up to three days per week. The total time is extended up to 9 to 12 hours and is considered more demanding because of the additional time it requires.
This type of therapy is reserved for those who have more severe cases of substance abuse or mental health disorders, or attempted standard outpatient and failed. In addition, it could also serve as a bridge between inpatient rehab and a halfway house.
Partial Hospitalization
Partial Hospitalization is when a client participates at a rehab facility for five days per week for the larger portion of the day. This is usually a window of about 8 hours. This form of treatment is far more intense, and the step before residential rehab.
Clients are still able to maintain living at home but will find it difficult to hold a steady job. This form of treatment is typically best served for parents who must be home in the evenings to care for children or other family members. They also must ensure they have a strong support structure.

Cigna Insurance Coverage for Inpatient Rehab
During inpatient treatment, you live in a res identical environment while receiving professional counseling services for mental health or substance abuse. This takes place over the course of 30, 60, or 90 days – but could go below or above these figures.
This is the best option for individuals who have long-term substance abuse or mental health challenges, dual diagnosis or any other type of co-occurring health problems or lack a solid support structure at home or work.
Depending on a physician’s assessment, medically-assisted detox may take place before inpatient treatment. Afterwards, most clients transition into outpatient, intensive outpatient, a halfway house, or focus on a solid support structure via friends and family and make a full return to the home environment.
This also depends heavily on what you’re comfortable with and what you believe you can handle mentally. It’s important not to put yourself back into a position that has a high potential for relapse.
Will Anyone Know I Attend Rehab?
Every rehab in the country must follow a strict set of guidelines and adhere to HIIPA laws, granting every client a right to privacy and complete non-disclosure. This is against the law, and any information disclosed regarding your health or mental well-being without permission is punishable by law.
However, certain exceptions apply in extreme situations. This includes court orders, emergency situations, or meeting the demands of an evaluation program.
You may give professional counselors permission to communicate information regarding your status or treatment to certain family members who call or meet with those handling your treatment in person.

Types of Cigna Insurance Plans Available
Cigna Insurance provides a number of different plans on an individual basis and for employees. Family plans are also available as a group package for immediate dependents. These plans are known as health maintenance organization (HMO), preferred provider organization (PPO), exclusive provider organization (EPO), and point-of-service (POS).
The standard levels of coverage include:
- This normally covers 60% while clients pay the additional 40%. This is the lowest-priced plan.
- Cigna pays 70% while you pay 30%.
- Cigna covers 80% while you cover 20. The monthly cost of these plans is much higher.
- Cigna covers 90 while you only cover 10%. However, this is the most expensive plan available.
An HMO plan makes it mandatory that you select a PC (primary care provider) from a designated network of professionals assembled by the insurance company. HMOs have much lower monthly rates, assuming your professional appointments are with organizations within the network.
EPOs allow you to go outside of the network to select participating providers. You must choose a primary care provider, and if you attempt to obtain treatment from a provider outside of the network after you select a PC, you most likely won’t receive coverage.
A POS provides in-network care at a much lower rate, making it mandatory that you select a PC, but you’re able to see specialists outside of the network. However, these specialists require a referral from your PC. Cigna will cover in and out-of-network but your copay is likely higher if you choose the latter.
Specific Benefits of a Cigna PPO Insurance Rehab
PPO coverage gives you an extended network of professionals and you’re not under obligation to choose a PC. You don’t even need to obtain a referral when seeing a specialist. These plans offer the most flexibility.
With any plan, you’re likely required to meet the requirements of a deductible or a copay if the treatment you receive isn’t fully covered by your plan. A copay is a flat, pre-determined about you pay for any services rendered. Coinsurance is when you pay a percentage of the costs. A deductible is the set amount you must pay for your covered treatment BEFORE Cigna will pay its portion.
When you receive treatment from a provider considered in-network, it helps you to avoid paying full price. Normally, in-network treatment centers have a set price they’ve established with your insurance provider. These are almost always at a much lower price than other facilities.
What Does Each Type of Treatment Cost?
The cost of specific types of treatment fluctuates depending on the facility and specifics about your treatment plan, etc. The length goes a long way in determining the final cost of your treatment. Your history of substance abuse, your drug of choice, and your insurance coverage are usually the other factors that come into play when determining the final cost.
Specific levels of substance abuse are rated as minimally intensive, highly intensive, etc. More intensive cases typically require additional funding than lower intensities. Even so, most insurance providers still cover the highest levels, although not the full amount. This also rests on the organization and your specific type of coverage.
Highly intensive rehab usually entails a high number of services, in addition to 24-hour care during medical detox. The most intensive to the least intensive are listed below:
Medically assisted Detox: Medically-assisted detox is the process in which a client has their withdrawal symptoms managed by professional medical staff. This normally takes place at the rehab facility or at a hospital, depending on the severity of the situation. Clients are monitored 24 hours per day and given medication to help them remain stable and comfortable during painful withdrawal symptoms. Outpatient detox is typically $300 to $900 per day. Inpatient rehab programs include medical detox as part of the overall price.
Inpatient Rehab. Inpatient rehab may seem similar to detox – however, inpatient treatment covers the mental aspect of recovery. Once a client is well enough to exist detox, they usually transition directly into inpatient treatment where they begin meeting with counselors and other mental health professionals. This is when the true healing process begins. This type of care lasts anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months. The price tag for this type of treatment ranges anywhere from $15,000 to $90,000 or more for the duration of treatment. This depends on the location, services rendered, and more.
Outpatient rehab. Outpatient rehab is a less intensive form of therapy where clients aren’t required to reside at the facility. These also include support groups and other meetings. The cost of these services range in price, depending on whether it’s intensive outpatient or standard outpatient. They normally hover around the same price a facility charges for inpatient, minus room, board, and food.
