Why Addressing Trauma Is Essential to Lasting Wellness

Healing Starts Here

Trauma Treatment at Exclusive Hawaii Rehab™
The effects of trauma impact everyone differently. Some people may experience episodes of aggression or violence. According to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), “Child abuse and neglect have been shown to increase the risk of later forms of antisocial behavior, including violence perpetration and crime in adulthood.” Early intervention and treatment for mental health issues is the best way to avoid experiencing adverse side effects. TIC reduces the risk of individuals with SUD or mental health issues developing maladaptive behaviors, including substance use or self-destructive tendencies.
Exclusive Hawaii Rehab uses trauma therapy and other forms of trauma treatment to help clients heal and grow. Some of the programs and services offered include:
- Residential treatment (RTC)
- Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
- Evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Outpatient
- Alumni services
- Anger management
- Psychotherapy
- Alternative holistic therapies like acupuncture
- Aftercare planning
Trauma and Mental Health
Treating trauma is often complicated. Many contributing factors affect how trauma impacts a person’s ability to function. Two individuals can experience the same traumatic event; one may develop severe mental health issues while the other processes the event and moves forward with their life without lasting side effects. A person’s ability to cope with stress and access social support plays a vital role in how they manage and process trauma.
Untreated trauma can cause the following mental and physical health issues:
- Chronic fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating
- Personality disorders
- Sleep disturbances
- Panic or anxiety attacks
- Dissociative events, including flashbacks and memory loss
- Depressive episodes
- Social withdrawal and loneliness

What Is Trauma-Informed Therapy?
Trauma-informed therapy is a form of trauma treatment focused on providing clients with a space where they feel emotionally and physically safe. Our clinicians are trained to recognize and react appropriately to nonverbal cues related to trauma throughout mental health and addiction treatment.
Trauma-informed therapy does the following:
- Educates
- Empowers
- Uplifts
- Provides a sense of safety
- Prioritizes client autonomy
The Benefits of Trauma-Informed Therapy
Trauma may affect many aspects of a client’s life, and behavioral health treatment works best when it addresses them all. Clients with a history of trauma often have better outcomes when they play an active role in directing their own treatment and specific needs. According to SAMHSA, “In a trauma-informed approach, patients are actively engaged in their care, and their feedback drives the direction of the care plan.”
Trauma-informed therapy has many potential benefits for clients across their recovery journey, including:
- Ensuring clients have a greater understanding of their condition
- Creating a sympathetic and supportive environment for effective treatment
- Helping clients re-establish safety
- Teaching healthy coping skills
- Helping clients to identify and cope with triggers
- Decreasing the symptoms and side effects of trauma
- Allowing clients to fully process traumatic events

Reducing the Risk of Re-Traumatization and Relapse
Clients in inpatient care for substance abuse benefit from trauma-informed therapy. Relapse has the potential to cause severe illness, injury, or death. Individuals in early recovery for substance use disorder (SUD) or dual diagnosis have a higher risk of backsliding into old behaviors, thought patterns, and routines. Treatment that accommodates trauma helps you or your loved one avoid relapse and build a solid foundation for positive life changes in our residential program.
FAQs
Each person’s journey with trauma and maladaptive coping disorders is unique. However, relying on trained professionals with evidence-based therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy can be a great way to learn more about trauma and its effects to develop a personalized treatment plan. Evidence-based care, coupled with personalized holistic healing opportunities and a trauma-informed environment, can be an effective intervention for dealing with trauma and its effects on daily life.
While most dedicated treatment facilities for addiction, mental health disorders, and trauma will provide trained care, luxury facilities like Exclusive Hawaii Rehab go above and beyond to tend to personal needs and goals. Luxury amenities ensure comfort even during difficult times. Having daily needs tended to, such as meals prepared by our on-site chef, empowers you to focus wholly on your own health care and wellbeing.
With comfort and support, you can better explore your needs and goals while putting in the hard work to get to the core root of the challenges you face.
Yes. Women have a higher risk of developing mental health disorders related to trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to the Office on Women’s Health, “Past year prevalence of PTSD among adults was higher for females (5.2%) than for males (1.8%).” Trauma manifests differently for everyone. For example, one individual who experiences childhood trauma may become withdrawn and socially isolate themselves, while another may experience episodes of aggression or violence. Treatment must address the root cause of the condition while also helping people manage behavioral issues caused by the disorder.
Absolutely! While each person’s experiences in treatment and rehab are different, depending on their needs, goals, progress, and a myriad of other factors, there is no replacement for professional support when overcoming the complex challenges of trauma, mental health disorders, or addiction. The cost of addiction can be great, but luxury rehab can provide personalized options for lasting change, doing more than just addressing isolated symptoms.
Many of those living with trauma or addiction may not be aware of the many ways it affects their physical health, mental health, or even behaviors. For many who have lived through traumatic experiences, feeling down or even hopeless can seem like the “norm.” However, there are signs that professional help can bring profound change.
If the effects of trauma, PTSD, or addiction begin to interfere with personal or professional life, such as calling out due to its symptoms, having difficulty holding a steady job, or experiencing friction in important personal relationships due to isolation or mood swings, professional care may be necessary.
Likewise, if drugs or alcohol feel necessary to placate difficult feelings or to numb the brain to difficult memories or flashbacks, professional care is paramount to develop new and healthier coping skills.
Talking to a professional about your experiences, daily life, and goals can all help determine if professional care with us is right for you. We are also available to explore new perspectives and help you realize your own goals at any stage of healing.

Each person’s time with us is different. That includes the length of treatment. Likewise, treatment is divided into levels of care that have some variance as you reach new milestones. First is detox, which can typically last up to two weeks. Afterwards, many transition to residential treatment, with options lasting up to 90 days. However, we work with you every step of the way and are prepared to adjust the length of your program to fit your needs and goals, with 30-day, 60-day, and 90-day options as well as flexibility within these programs, so you never feel you are left without the support you need.
After residential treatment, your journey still continues. Intensive outpatient and aftercare options are part of your sustained healing journey, and can continue for as long as you are actively engaged in recovery and the healing community in Hawaii.
